Saudi Arabia approves the establishment of an artificial intelligence center based in Riyadh - the International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research

The Saudi Council of Ministers, in its session held on Tuesday, headed by Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince and Chairman of the Council, approved the establishment of a center called the “International Center for Artificial Intelligence Research and Ethics,” with its headquarters in the city of Riyadh. The Center seeks to promote sound practices in adopting artificial intelligence technologies, support research, development and innovation development initiatives at the national and international levels, and ensure the ethical and responsible use of artificial intelligence.

The establishment of the center comes within the framework of a number of steps and legislation taken by Saudi Arabia to enhance the uses of artificial intelligence and digital solutions, and to place Saudi Arabia among the influential and pioneering countries in providing digital services and advanced technical options.

For his part, Dr. Abdullah Al-Ghamdi, Chairman of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA), said, “The center will enhance the Kingdom’s role regionally and internationally in the field to ensure strengthening research efforts and achieving responsible use of artificial intelligence applications.”

In September 2022, Saudi Arabia launched the principles of artificial intelligence ethics prepared by SDAIA, and urged all interested parties to read them to facilitate the practical application of ethics.
